I know Billy Crocket as a kingmaker, introducing and applauding and supporting a wide range of talent from East Coast to West Coast and all of the states in between, at his recording studio-home of Blue Rock, in Wimberley, Texas. But now he is here, in someone else’s home, performing at a house concert in New Braunfels.
Long and lean, with a tousled mop of thick dark hair peppered with streaks of gray, Billy Crockett perches on a tall wooden stool in front of a rock fireplace. Alone. With his guitar. A shy smile touches his lips. Lighting up his face. And he talks about all of the singer-songwriters and friends and acquaintances that have passed through his life and the conversations he has had with them. The stories they have told. The dreams they have followed. And the realization that he too loves to make music, and so—he is back. As are a myriad of other singers and songwriters and musical groups—he reminds us— “and Neil Diamond just goes on forever.” Now I smile too.
Yes, Billy Crockett is back, with his latest CD—The Rabbit Hole
The singer-songwriters that I love the most are equally great storytellers, and Billy Crockett doesn’t disappoint. He asks us questions. He makes us feel comfortable. It’s a conversation with an old friend made new by the discoveries he relates. His memories unfold in heartfelt words and songs that tell us about ourselves, his life, his love, his views. Our wants.
Listening closely I discover that Billy is also a very wise man as he intones the words… “I keep thinking I’ll get this right. I wish I may. I wish I might. It’s the story of my life…I didn’t want to be feeling small…light as a feather…I wanted to knock down that wall…If I hadn’t missed that train. If I had stayed in school. If I could stop the rain… But here, now, tonight—it’s already perfect.”
Yes, it’s already perfect! Yes, it’s life. We all just need to stop and take time to realize it. And we need to follow our dreams like Billy Crockett has done all of his life.
Listen to his words.
Real life people who have heard his songs have this to say:
“I cracked my neck… cracked my knuckles… and cried… If you want to be a writer… this is what you’re after…”
“James Taylor, Mac MacAnally, Dan Fogelberg….name any guitar playing “singer-songwriter” and I think Billy Crockett tops them all.”
In 2017 Rolling Stone dubbed Billy Crockett as 1 of the 10 New Country Artists You Need to Know

Blue Rock Studios
All musicians that I have ever heard perform at Blue Rock Studios say it is their dream to be there. I have gone so many times never knowing anything about who I was going to hear except what I gleaned from the Internet AFTER making a reservation. I have never been disappointed. Concerts have been suspended while they do a bit of remodeling, but keep track of their schedule by following this link. http://www.bluerocktexas.com/
