We drive for food, I think, as Michael noses our car west toward Highway 473. It is Sunday—it is brunch time, and it is as good a day and as good a time as any to return to the charming Peggy’s on the Green in Boerne.
Arriving a tad early for our 11:15 reservation, we seat ourselves on two of the white rockers that line the porch of Ye Olde Kendall Inn, and rock. Even though it is the beginning of July the weather is decent, not yet scorching, a gentle breeze ruffles the leaves of the trees on the grassy green beyond.
As we approach the door to the restaurant I notice several tables on the wrap-around side porch where contented guests sip drinks and are also apparently having brunch. I am so tempted—I love alfresco dining—everything tastes better outside.
Inside is a mixture of old made new, rustic and contemporary. Bright. Airy. Clean. Welcoming. Comfortable. The dress of the day ranges from very casual to dressy casual. The waiters are decked out in their impeccable dark gray. The staff is friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. The menu contains a page of delicious sounding temptations—all with a twist.
The potato pancakes are made with sweet potatoes; the French toast with eggnog battered sweet rolls. The Eggs Benedict is made with apple-wood smoked country ham, or short ribs on a biscuit, or soft-shell crab on a tomato. Buttermilk fried chicken and waffles come with a mac and cheese waffle; the grits with shrimp are made with pimento cheese. I think I’m going to have to do eeny, meeny, miny, moe to help me decide, or maybe just close my eyes and point?
Seated at a cozy table for two, Michael orders a Bloody Mary while I opt for champagne. I’m thinking shrimp and grits but really want bacon. Trying to have my cake and eat it too I suggest we order a side of bacon for an appetizer and share it. Apparently, this is unheard of; another waiter comes to our table and asks, “Did you really order bacon for an appetizer? That’s so great. I love bacon.”
Michael’s Bloody Mary is excellent; my champagne is a perfect bubbly foil for the smoky bacon. After Michael chooses Eggs Benedict for his entrée, I switch from my first choice of shrimp to Short Ribs Benedict. Eggs perfectly poached, served on a split biscuit with shredded short ribs and delicately napped with a decidedly mild hatch chili hollandaise is delicious, despite the fact I’m missing the imagined over-the-top charred, fire roasted bite of hatch I was expecting; a touch of heat does come from the paper-thin slice of jalapeno that sits atop each egg.
Looking to extend the experience I order another glass of champagne and snatch the bottom of one of Michael’s biscuits—part of his dessert order of biscuits and gravy. (Who ever said you have to do the expected?) Upon request, our waiter brings me a small dish of huckleberry jam. I slather it on my crunchy bottom biscuit half, bit by bit, till the champagne is gone and we have no more excuse to linger. Well, I guess there is coffee, but we are halfway out the door before I think of this.
