A friend once told me, long ago, that I was serendipitous. I wish things dropped into my lap that easily, but mostly it takes work. Research at least. Sometimes I’m lucky.
The Loft Apartment
“This reminds me of Italy,” Michael says, as I push open the downstairs door and look up. After climbing to the top of the stairs leading to the door of our loft apartment rental in downtown Galveston, I wonder if I’ll be lucky today.
I’m not even winded as I punch in the key code. I turn the knob. Open the door. And hope.
“Oh Michael! It’s wonderful!”
The space is old and new and spacious and charming with ceilings that are three Michaels tall and are made of authentic pressed tin. I could move in permanently. The owner is thoughtful. A giant basket loaded with chips is on the dining table set for two. The refrigerator is stocked with cokes and ginger-ale and water and most important—non-dairy creamer. A small card next to a bouquet of flavored cone-shaped popcorn welcomes us.
There are extra covers for the bed and an afghan on the couch. There are not only one but two rolls of paper towels. The bed is comfortable and the sofa is comfortable. There is a place to set up my computer. On a scale of 1 – 10, I think this is a 20! Perfection!
We could be in Europe. A walkable city with an apartment right in the middle of things. Almost everything accessible by foot. I’m in heaven. But then again I’m almost always in heaven. I pretty much love it all. All of life. All of the world. But now I have to unpack. I don’t love that.
The Star Drugstore
Our loft apartment is located over the Star Drugstore, reported to be the oldest drugstore in Texas. It has survived numerous hurricanes and rose from the ashes like the proverbial Phoenix when a 1998 fire closed its doors till 2001 when the Tilts family purchased the building and renovated the drugstore as well as two loft apartments. One of which I am lucky enough to be sitting in right now as I type these words.
When I read that the Star has the best breakfasts in town I decide to forsake the bacon and eggs in the refrigerator and make the short trek downstairs to eat in the renovated old fashioned space.
Tucked into a table at the side front of the drugstore I can’t decide between eggs and pancakes. Michael comes to my rescue by pointing out I can have it all. “You can substitute toast for one pancake,” he tells me. I’m set. I smile. Michael orders two eggs. I order one. He orders sausage. I prefer bacon. We both have coffee. Lots of coffee.
The eggs are a perfect over easy. The bacon cooked just the way I like it. The pancake which is redolent with sweet maple syrup and kissed with butter is wonderful. Not too big. Not too small and just one – exactly what I want. This is such a great way to begin the day I’m beginning to think maybe I am just a tiny bit serendipitous.
