Racing by Brenner’s Steakhouse on the Katy Freeway on our way back to my daughter Heather’s house, she tells me, “Brendan has wanted to take me there forever–he’s been many times on business–but I’ve never been.”
Well, I think, there is no time like the present.
It is 11 a.m. on a Friday and chances are slim for snagging a reservation this evening. I click on my Open Table app and try for reservations for four of us anyway. Unbelievably, I have success.
The Restaurant
Walking through the door of Brenner’s Steakhouse is like going home. It is a lovely return to a kinder gentler time where the familiar tastes of classic dishes are executed to perfection and the noise level is low enough to allow welcome conversation with your dinner partners.
It is a step back to another era. An era when individuals dressed when dining out and suits and ties and little back dresses were in vogue. Although the attire these days is a bit mixed; dressing for an elegant evening out would not be out of place. A sundress and casual shirt and slacks while having drinks on their wonderful hidden patio is also apropos.
Looking at the menu I want to be good. I peruse the fish selections, but other areas on the pages before me tempt even more.
The Wine
Brenner’s has a top-notch wine list with prices to match. However, along with very good wines by the glass, they also offer less expensive wines by the bottle. These are worthy of exploration and can be found on the first page of this list. There is one that I recognize from a favorite vintner–Michael David. After cocktails all around, we order a bottle of his Petite Syrah, Petite Verdot blend.
The Food
Anything with bacon is always better–at least in my book. And a bacon appetizer appeals to all four of us–but we want to share. Our waiter looks perplexed, but in the end, he says it should work. Bacon takes on new meaning when two 1/4″-thick slices of roasted bacon are set in the center of the table. Drizzled with a maple-pepper glaze, melted blue cheese, and Dr. Pepper reduction it is a decadent and ample appetizer for four of us to share.
The lobster bisque is rich and delicious with large chunks of tender lobster hidden beneath. Each of our entrees is very well prepared and beautifully presented. The presentation of the humble melt-in-your-mouth boneless short rib takes on a much grander stature under the chef’s deft hand.
Brenner’s Steakhouse is definitely a place to keep on our list. I do look forward to many more dining adventures and special occasions when visiting Houston.
