Michael Plans an Outing
Few people would think of driving an hour for a kolache—but I would. And not many husbands would agree to such an outing—but this is Michael’s idea! He LOVES kolaches, and this little bakery is touted to bake the best kolaches in Houston. Michael even put it on our calendar with an excursion to the 1940 Air Terminal Museum thrown in for good measure.
Last night I asked him when he wanted to leave on our trek into Houston to have kolaches, and his reply was, “Early. When they open.”
Well, they open at 5 am, so that didn’t happen.
The Original Kolache Shoppe
At 9:30, we back out of the driveway of our Galveston rental and drive north. There is fog on the freeway and cars driving too fast. Lots and lots of cars. Surely these aren’t commuters—but I’m not sure they are tourists either.
Michael exits I-45 as soon as possible and we take Telephone Road until we reach our destination. If we weren’t looking—if we didn’t have a GPS warning us—we would pass by The Original Kolache Shoppe. It is minuscule and if you are a driver heading north, it is tucked away from view.
We exit the car five and a half hours after they open and one and a half hours before they close. The kolaches are almost gone! There are two cherry filled and less than half a dozen blueberry kolaches left in the case. However, they have lots of sausage kolaches and an abundance of flaky meat-stuffed croissant rectangles to purchase. We buy the last two cherry kolaches and one sausage. I want to try their croissant rectangles—I choose ham and cheese.
We take our treasures and two large cups of strong dark coffee outside to the tiny tables and feast on a perfect breakfast. The croissant rectangle is appropriately flaky and stuffed full of ham—and I mean stuffed FULL of ham! The cherry kolache is as light as a feather-down pillow, soft, sweet, and delicious. We have to come back—at least one more time.
