Sometimes I just get lucky. I could say it was serendipity that led me through the doors of the Bistro 108 in La Grange—but it wasn’t. I researched a place to eat during our midweek March Wildflower excursion when our goal was to head south toward the Coastal Prairies not north and west into the rocky landscape of the Texas Hills.
The restaurant is small and cozy. Too late I spy an outdoor courtyard with a small-town funky vibe for alfresco dining. The wait staff is friendly and efficient. The requisite pre-meal bread and butter are set before us. I nibble on a small piece and tell Michael, “If this bread is any indication of what’s in store for us, it’s going to be great.” The fresh baguette has a golden crispy crust with a soft warm interior. A simple pleasure.
But still, I temper my expectations. I have been lured to too many destinations with the promise of multiple stars on Trip Advisor, but today I think I got it right. I’ve known since this morning that I was going to order a BLT because they are rarely served at any restaurant. When the combination appears on a menu, I just have to try it. This one says it is BLT Delish. We’ll see.
My sandwich is presented open-faced along with a pile of onion rings. I pop one into my mouth. It is excellent. Crisp. Light. Delicate. Oniony. Not a drop of extra grease clinging anywhere. I pick up one of the grilled shrimp, part of my BLT, and take a bite. Perfectly fresh. Perfectly cooked. Perfectly seasoned.
I begin to devour my assembled sandwich and there is a party going on in my mouth—finally, I understand the term. The bacon like everything else is—once again—perfect. The combination of salty crisp bacon, spicy mustard, red ripe tomato, creamy avocado and the softest sweetest sourdough bun I’ve ever tasted has me making immediate plans to return. Apparently, Susan Kuehler, the Executive Chef-Owner, knows how to find and put flavors together that elevate even a simple BLT to something extraordinary.
I’m beginning to think an overnight trip is in order so I can try out the dinner menu.

BLT Delish
The description on the menu said the BLT would be served on a Sheila Partin soft & sweet sourdough bun, which meant nothing to me till I tasted it. Upon Googling Sheila Partin, I discovered she began baking sweet sourdough bread for her husband and children in her own kitchen in Houston in 1989. When she baked, she also shared her fresh bread with relatives and friends. Soon, everyone who tasted it wanted to buy it. Believe me, I understand why. What makes me even happier is that you can pick up an order from their Houston store as well as order it online and receive it via UPS. Sheila Partin Bakery
